Nollywood actress Beverly Naya has responded to n interviewer who questioned her on particular roles she is known to play.
Beverly Naya is one of the Nollywood stresses who is known for a particular movie role. She is mostly known to play the role of the rich lady, the seductive role, and the bad girl roles.
During an interview with Inkblot’s Meet and Greet, Beverly Naya was asked how she feels about taking up roles one-way roles. Responding, Beverly debunked the claim that she acts in one-way roles. She recounted how she was given a role where she spoke with a Nigerian accent throughout and also played a role of a schizophrenic person.
In her words….
“To be honest, I’ve played a variety of roles. I’ve played a woman with a Nigerian accent, there was a film where I played a schizophrenic person so from my perspective, no (I’ve not been typecast). But unfortunately, a lot of these films just never got released. (The movie where I played the schizophrenic person), I shot that in Abeokuta and that character literally took so much out of me and I was really excited for that movie to come out because it was going to be a film that was going to show me in a completely different light.”
“Unfortunately, it never got released. It can be really frustrating. It’s really annoying because there are films that show versatility, show range, and show a different accent, but if it’s a low-budget film or if the producer, unfortunately, doesn’t have a strong enough strategy for the film, it just may never get released.”
“Like when The Wedding Party came out, it was a massive film. It’s the second highest-grossing Nigerian film of all time. In so many ways even though I was established at the time, The Wedding Party was very influential. It did definitely do a lot of things for my career but then what came of that was a typecast thing and that whole idea that that’s all I play. Now around the same time, there were other films that came out that were a lot smaller than this film but they just didn’t do as well.”
“There was one that came out that went straight to IrokoTV and unfortunately if it comes out and goes straight to a streaming platform, not many people get to see it. And in that film, I was a woman who was being physically abused by her husband. So I’m just not in control of these things.
“Then you have another example, Skinny Girl in Transit, huge on YouTube. So we have The Wedding Party, the highest-grossing, you now have this one on Youtube, of course, you’re going to automatically assume that that’s all I play. Because these smaller films, unfortunately, do not do as well. So I’m not even trying to toot my own horn, I know my range as an actor.”
